Abstract:
This study examines the determinants and consequences of human images used on financial reports, with a focus on the selection of face images by firms in their annual reports. Using a sample of 129,251 images from 2085 financial reports in Chile, we investigate the factors influencing firms’ choices of gender, ethnic, and age diversity, as well as the sentiment conveyed by the faces (angry, disgust, fear, happy, sad, surprise, neutral). Our findings suggest that firm performance and industry play a significant role in determining the types of human images included in financial reports and the impression they seek to convey. This study is the first of its kind to explore the use of human images in financial reports of Chilean firms. Our results contribute to the literature on financial report soft information such as readability, sentiment analysis, as well as the literature on impression management.
