Abstract:

In this article, Laulié & Escaffi-Schwarz(2026) refine the conceptualization of emergence in longitudinal multilevel team research, using Bisbey et al.’s (2025) study on team resilience as a focal point. The authors distinguish between team-level trajectories (changes over time) and the actual process of emergence, which involves individual-level phenomena manifesting as collective properties. They argue that longitudinal changes do not inherently constitute emergence and advocate for a stricter focus on compilation and composition processes. By re-analyzing Bisbey et al.’s data, the authors demonstrate how explicitly modeling emergence provides deeper insights into team dynamics and the emergence of collective constructs.
