Título: How do mission-driven organizations become hybrid? Examining business model changes in international non-profit organizations
Abstract: Increased competition and scarce public funds have led non-profit organizations (NPOs) to include commercial revenue streams, changing their donation-based models toward more enterprising ones. While extensive research has focused on business models for ‘born hybrid’ social enterprises, business model changes for traditional NPOs, such as non-governmental organizations, remains poorly understood. This paper aims to provide novel insights into business model changes for NPOs. Drawing on an original database of non-governmental organizations, we find that, in contrast to other research, NPOs are less likely to develop strongly enterprising business models when they have been previously funded by corporations. Also, NPOs tend to integrate a novel commercial logic only when the social logic remains dominant. This study contributes to the literature on non-profit organizations, business models and hybrids, and calls for a more specific and context-dependent approach.
